Chairs that hold you

Why every escape has one chair worth sitting in all afternoon — and who carves them.

There are three chairs at Sanctuary Retreat that guests ask about more than the view. Each was carved from a single walnut trunk by a workshop two valleys away.

The Cloud chair in the Alpine Lodge is upholstered in undyed wool and leans back just far enough to see the summit without lifting your head. The Shell, in the Forest Cabin, wraps around you like the porch around the cabin.

It is the only chair we have ever had to replace — a guest refused to leave without it.

The Rocker lives by the fire in the Lakeside Villa. It is the only chair we have ever had to replace — not because it broke, but because a guest refused to leave without it.

All three are available to order from the workshop. Ask at reception, or simply sit in one for an hour and see if you still need to ask.
