The upper meadow below the peak

Species

Life around
the retreat

A field guide to the neighbours: what grows on the ledges and in the lake, and who watches from the meadow.

Flora · Lake shallows, July–September

Frost Dahlia

A graceful aquatic flower known for its perfect symmetry and calming presence. It opens at first light and closes as soon as the sun leaves the water.

Flora · Limestone ledges above 1,800 m

Edelweiss

The woolly white star of the Alps grows on the rock bands along the cliff walk. Look, photograph, never pick.

Flora · Upper meadow, May–July

Trumpet Gentian

Deep blue trumpets that colour the meadow in early summer; its roots were once used for the valley’s bitter liqueur.

Flora · Around the Forest Cabin

Arolla Pine

Slow-growing and long-lived; some trees around the cabin are older than the village. The wood scents the cabin’s sauna.

Fauna · Ridge thermals, late morning

Golden Eagle

A breeding pair hunts along the north face. Bring the lodge binoculars on the cliff walk and look for the long, flat glide.

Fauna · Meadow burrows, April–October

Alpine Marmot

You will hear them before you see them: a sharp whistle from a sentry on a boulder, then everyone disappears.
